Professor Wolfgang Glänzel Delivered a Series of Scientometrics Seminars





From 14 to 17 July 2026, the Institute for Informatics and Automation Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia successfully hosted a series of seminars delivered by Professor Wolfgang Glänzel, one of the world's leading experts in scientometrics, Professor at KU Leuven and Director of ECOOM (Research and Development Monitoring Research Centre).

The visit was organized within the framework of the research grant project 25YSSP-VRP-012, funded through the "Short-Term Visits of Foreign Scientists to Research Organizations of the Republic of Armenia" program by the Young Scientists Support Program. The project is led by Dr. Gevorg Kesoyan (PhD in History).


During the seminar series, Professor Glänzel presented contemporary theoretical and applied approaches in scientometrics, covering the following topics:
  • Bibliometric Indicators – key indicators for evaluating scientific publications, citation analysis, field-normalized metrics, and the fundamental principles of research performance assessment.
  • Science Mapping and Network Analysis – methods for mapping scientific knowledge and analyzing research networks, including co-authorship analysis, self-citation, bibliographic coupling, and cluster analysis.
  • Interdisciplinarity – theoretical foundations of interdisciplinarity, quantitative methods for its assessment, and the opportunities and limitations of scientometric tools for analyzing interdisciplinary research.
  • Scientometrics 2.0 and Altmetrics – contemporary approaches to assessing research impact, including social media attention, usage metrics, and alternative metrics (altmetrics), together with their potential and limitations in research evaluation.
  • Career and Institutional Evaluation – the application of scientometric tools to evaluate academic careers, collaboration networks, journal performance indicators, and the performance and excellence of research institutions.

The seminars were attended by all staff members of the Center for Scientific Information Analysis and Monitoring, early-career researchers, PhD students, and representatives of research organizations. The discussions provided participants with an opportunity to learn about international best practices in scientometrics, state-of-the-art analytical methods, and their applications in both research activities and evidence-based science policy and research management.

The seminar series made an important contribution to the development of scientometrics in Armenia by promoting modern research evaluation methodologies and strengthening international scientific collaboration.

On the agenda there is the preliminary defense of the dissertation for the PhD degree (specialty 05.13.04) of Lilia Kirakosyan on "Development of a System for Detection, Classification, and Suppression of Radio Signals".





Հիմք ընդունելով "Բնական լեզվի և խոսքի մշակման" թեմայով 23RL-1B028 գիտահետազոտական նախագծի իրականացման ընթացքում ձևավորված գիտական խմբի գործունեությունը և գիտական խորհրդի դրական կարծիքը, ինչպես նաև հայերենի ավտոմատ մշակման, խոսքի ճանաչման և բնական լեզվի տեխնոլոգիաների զարգացման կորևորությունը՝ ստեղծվեց "Բնական լեզվի և խոսքի մշակման լաբորատորիա" որպես ՀՀ ԳԱԱ ԻԱՊԻ-ի կառուցվածքայի ստորաբաժանում։
