В отделе выполняются фундаментальные исследования в областях вероятностной теории информации Шеннона, классической и квантовой статистики, моделирование многомасштабных физико-химических процессов. Важные результаты исследований этого направления начатых с 60-х годов прошлого века приведены в монографии [1]. Выборочные публикации за последние пять лет представлены в списке.

Основная цель исследования заключается в изучении функции выражающей оптимальную взаимозависимость основных характеристик (скорость передачи, вероятность ошибки, надежность, уровень искажения и т.д.) сложных систем надежной передачи, защиты и сжатия информации. В частности, получены результаты для дискретного канала без памяти; для различных моделей каналов множественного доступа, широковещательного, двустороннего и интерференционного; для составного канала, канала со случайным параметром и произвольно меняющегося канала; а также для различных моделей источников. В последние годы проведены информационно-теоретические исследования относительно моделей систем сокрытия информации, каналов с секретными сообщениями, ряда моделей систем идентификации на основе биометрических данных. Результаты полезны для разработки устойчивых и надежных систем и для оценки их возможностей. Решение задач позволяет оценить предельные возможности систем и определить эффективность предложенных систем или кодов.
