  • On July 3, 2026 at 11:00 the Institute for Informatics and Automation Problems (IIAP NAS RA) is pleased to host a seminar by Dr. Avgoustinos Avgousti and Prof. Nikolas Bakirtzis.

Venue: IIAP NAS RA, 4th Floor – Seminar Room.

    Seminar Title:
Digital Cultural Heritage at the Cyprus Institute: Documenting, Visualizing, Preserving and Disseminating the Remnants of our Past

Scientific and technological advances have revolutionized the ways we document, study and preserve our precious tangible and intangible heritage. New technological tools, applications, and scientific methods developed and applied by a broad range of experts help us to enable discoveries, to enrich our knowledge and to preserve the remnants of our past for the future. Led by Avgoustinos Avgousti and Nikolas Bakirtzis, with backgrounds in research software engineering and art and architectural history respectively, this presentation draws from work at the Cyprus Institute’s ‘Andreas Pittas Art Characterization Laboratories’ (https://apaclabs.cyi.ac.cy) of the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Center (STARC), where an interdisciplinary team of experts works together to develop and apply a wide range of analytical and digital methods to address issues of materiality, technique, typology, style and provenance of works of art, monuments and sites. Selected case studies will provide some highlights of APAC Labs’ research.

The presentation will also offer an overview of research software engineering practices and their application in the development of digital repositories, content management systems, digital libraries, research platforms, and cloud-based infrastructures for cultural heritage. Drawing on examples from international research projects and digital heritage initiatives, the presentation will explore how sustainable software solutions support interdisciplinary collaboration, open science, data interoperability, and the long-term preservation of cultural resources. The talk will also discuss current challenges and future opportunities in building scalable and reusable digital infrastructures for cultural knowledge.
